​Could you be a Sense Community Support Worker?

We now have a fantastic opportunity for a Community Support Worker to join our team in Harborne, Birmingham.

This is a permanent role, working from 16 hours per week. 

This is a fun and rewarding opportunity to support a young individual who has Autism to access the community for social and leisure purposes. 

You will be supporting the young person to participate in activities they enjoy, have meaningful experiences, and make new friends. You will support them to make their own choices of how they want to spend their day, but a typical day in this role might be spent:

  • Attending a local centre that provides activities for people with learning difficulties
  • Fun days out around West Midlands - Cadbury World, Sea Life Centre, West Midlands Safari Park, Drayton Manor and many more!
  • Days out on the train to visit somewhere new
  • Days out for walks and lunch
  • Going to a trampoline park, then relaxing while looking at some picture books

The individual you will be supporting is a non- verbal communicator, so the ideal candidate will be confident with using other ways to communicate, for example using pictures, song and dance, or expressive body language. 

This a role working in the community on a 2:1 basis. Although you will be supporting in a community-setting, there is some support with personal care required (supporting the individual with toileting.)

There will also be opportunities to work with other individuals we support and gain skills working with children and adults who are Deafblind. 

You will be working approximately 3 days per week, Monday, Thursday and Friday.

The duties are varied and no two days will be the same. The people we support are individuals and they are all treated as such.

Your duties can include:

  • To support individuals / groups within the centre and community.
  • To provide a customised, responsive and high quality service to people with multiple sensory impairments, physical and/or learning disabilities who use Sense services.
  • To deliver services which meet or exceed organisational expectations and standards.

Your required skills and experiences:

  • For genuine occupational reasons we are looking to appoint a female candidate only (exemption under the Equality Act 2010 Part 1 Schedule 9).
  • You require a full UK license and must be willing to drive your own vehicle.
  • Experience and/or understanding of supporting individuals with autism and/or non- verbal communication is desirable.
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex needs is desirable.
