Can you help others to communicate?
Sense are looking for a passionate and motivated person to join our professional team as a Communicator Guide. This is a full time role working 20 hours per week.
Communicator Guides offer support to people who have sight and hearing impairments, you will support the individual to do the things they want to do - not to do things for them. You’ll be there to act as the eyes and ears of the individual – to make sure that communication is clear and that they are able to move around safely. The support you provide may be in someone’s home, their local community or work setting.
You will provide practical help and communication support to people with deafblindness – such as helping with shopping, dealing with mail, accessing social and leisure activities – to enable people with sensory loss to continue to live as independently as possible and decrease isolation.
In this role you will be providing Communicator Guide and Intervenor support to 3 different individuals in Walsall and Birmingham who are Deafblind or Deaf with additional needs. The working pattern is is 2 weekdays, 1 evening, and Saturdays. We can be flexible to work around days/times; however, you must be able to work on Saturdays.
All the people you support use British Sign Language to communicate, including adapted hands-on BSL. So you must be able to communicate using BSL at least to level 3, knowledge of hands on signing would be beneficial (if not you must be willing to learn, we will provide all the training). You also need to have a full UK driving licence and use of your own vehicle.
Every day in this role will be different. You will support people to do the things you need to do, but also support them to enjoy fun activities and join in Deaf social groups. Here is what one of the people you would be supporting in this role had to say:
“I need support from a Communicator Guide to read letters for me. After lockdown ends, I want to go to pottery workshops. I would really like some support to attend a Deafblind group and local Deaf clubs. I need some support to go out and get my food shopping, but I also like browsing in the arts and crafts shops to buy crafts I can make at home.”
