About the role
Sense are looking for a reliable and motivated person to join our professional team as a Senior Support Worker (Communicator Guide) in the Southampton area. We have a total of 16 hours available for two candidates to job share, likely on an 8 hour per week split. This is a fixed term position, working until January 2020
Communicator Guides offer support to people who have developed sight and hearing impairments, often as they get older; you will support the individual to do the things they want to do - not to do things for them. You’ll be there to act as the eyes and ears of the individual – to make sure that communication is clear and that they are able to move around safely.
These positions are to support individuals in their own home and local community. You will assist with communication, providing access to leisure activities in the local area and assisting with tasks such as visiting the doctors and shopping. Due to the communication needs of these individuals we are looking for candidates with British Sign Language skills to a level 3 or equivalent.
You must be able to work flexible hours to suit the service requirements and have the ability to work on your own initiative.
We would like to hear from you if you have experience of working with vulnerable people, and ideally have experience of working with people with a sensory impairment. A willingness to develop your skills in all communication methods is an essential part of this role. You will need to be able to creatively solve problems that may arise using a person-centred approach and ideally have experience of using person-centred planning tools.
You must be enthusiastic, adaptable and friendly with a commitment to ensuring the individual you work with get the best out of their lives.
The ideal candidate will hold, or be willing to work towards, a Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care or equivalent. A full UK driving licence and use of your own vehicle is an essential requirement for this role.
